The headline of the article about me read: “From Vegetable to Dynamo”. Why would they talk about me that way? Sure, I was in a car accident in 1991, resulting in a head injury causing me to sleep 20-22 hrs a day. Yes, I had to learn how to talk and how to think all over again (fascinating!). I was not a vegetable. I was healing, thinking, planning, and figuring out HOW to continue to be ME, even with the head trauma. I was a dynamo that just looked like a vegetable!

Thanks so much for all the great information.
I have always been overweight, and for most of my life i have been confinced that i need to be thin in order to be healthy. In order to do this i have gone through stages of severe depression, anxiety and panic disorders. I have been eating almost nothing and exercising to the point that i collapse.
I really like the idea of body acceptance and loving my body just the way it is. This will make such a differece in my life. I have not been living my life to the fullest, because of my weight. From now on, I will be my own body activist and will not let others, whether it is other people, websites or even myself, bring my body esteem down.
I have been busily going through The Plus Size Yellow Pages on your website. I am so happy that there is so much information on being healthy at any size. I have been looking for informaiton like this for a long time and I haven’t been able to find anything, but ‘you have to loose weight to be healthy’. It is admirable that you have collected and uploaded this database of amazing information and it has and will help alot of people in the future.
Also, how much exercise should we do a day in order to improve our health and our wellness?
I hope that everyone will eventually understand that there is health at every size and to participate in the healthy living, rather then struggling to try to change their body into something that its not.

Also, what do you think of the BMI?
Should i even worry about it? It always says that i am close to or am obese, but everyone cannot believe it when i tell them. I certainly don’t have any of the so called ‘weight related conditions’.
I have been thinking the bmi is wrong for a while now, just wondering what your thoughts were on BMI?

What a “revolutionary” idea: to spend time and focus on health CARE instead of the negatives of dieting, body bashing, etc. How simple, yet how enlightening and freeing!!

I thing the message is really important, I just don’t think that Kelly’s experience necessarily indicates that she is incapable of losing weight.
I’m truly sorry regarding her experience, her story is heartbreaking, but chronic cardio is not a good weight-loss method.
I learned, through trial and error that conventional methods like cardio and eating “heart healthy whole grains” are just not a good way to lose weight or be healthy.
When you’re chronically distressing your body by forcing it to do activities it was not designed to do (humans are meant to for slow movement, heavy lifting and only the occasional fast paces sprint), and when you’re starving your body by depriving it of essential nutrients like fats, replacing it with insulin spiking foods (wheat, grains, sugars) no matter how much you run, your body is in a state of panic and will hold onto to those pounds at any cost. It’s how the human body works- at a state of starvation, all available fuel is stored is fat. Period.
I too accepted that I was just ‘not meant to be a size *insert single digit number here*’. But I learned that it wasn’t my body that failed me it was conventional wisdom.
After years of research and reading the works of brilliant gurus like Cordain, Dr. Eads (both of them!), Enig, Fallon, Sisson, Taubes, Wolf, Stephenson, Gedgaudes and oh god, so many more… I cut out wheat and pasteurized dairy out of life and effortlessly lost weight, cleared my skin and got many other disorders under control (including PCOS).
I’m sorry, I don’t patronize to knowing how it must have been like for Kelly. I just get frustrated when people who claim to eat healthy (i.e ridiculous amounts of gluten, hormone laden dairy, or my personal pet peeve “vegetarian diets”) bemoan their genetic composition, throwing their hands up in the air in exasperation.
I don’t claim women should be one size or another (hell no!) and there’s a possibility Kelly’s composition makes her heavier than most, but I’m wondering if she looked outside the box?
Or maybe I’m just saying what I wish someone told me a long time ago!
